Aquarian Songs From Musicals

Aquarius

Air sign governed by Uranus, which confers artistic gifts, critical ability, genius, originality, accentuated intuition. Aquarius is a fraternal sign, and Aquarians are often endowed with a strong humanitarian spirit. Originality and rebellion can be considered as their trademark.

9 to 5 is a 1980 comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lilly Tomlin and Dolly Parton. The title song, written and performed by Parton, was a hit and earned her an Oscar nomination. The film was also a success and spawned a TV series. Almost 30 years later, the story of explored secretaries by the chief was taken to the Broadway stage with new songs composed by Parton. The cast starred Allison Jenney and revealed Megan Hilty, who went on to star NBC's show Smash.

"9 to 5"
9 to 5
(Dolly Parton)

"Workin' 9 to 5
What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin'
And no givin'
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it"

Independents, Aquarians hate commitment, or feeling trapped. But they also enjoy people's companies, who are generally drawn to their pleasant, engaging personality.

"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"
Mary Poppins
(Sherman brothers)

"It's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!"
Walt Disney spent decades trying to get the rights of English writer PL Travers  books. Due to financial problems, Travers gave in and Mary Poppins became a box office hit worldwide. The story of the magical nanny who transforms the banker's family life was turned into a cheerful and contagious musical, quite different from the way Travers had written in her books. The film won 5 Oscars, including best actress for Julie Andrews. In 2004 the stage version opened in the West End and in 2006 on Broadway, with some new songs.

Aquarius is honest and totally loyal, original and brilliant, independent and intellectual. The Aquarian is unpredictable and tends to counteract. They are unemotional and don't tolerate the emotional complexity of some people and betrayals among friends.

Duncan Sheik, a moderately successful alternative pop/rock musician decided to venture into theater and partnered with Steven Sater in adapting the 19th-century German novel Spring Awakening to the stage. The story of curious teenagers discovering sexuality, questioning the system and dealing with repression, became a  teen sensation in 2006, but also was praised by critics and the general public. It brought fame to Jonathan Groff and Lea Michelle, who went on to star in Fox's Glee. The show won eight Tony awards, including the best musical. In 2015 a revival with deaf-actors opened on Broadway.

"All That's Known"
Spring Awakening
(Duncan Sheik)

"All they say
Is "trust in what is written"
Wars are made
And somehow that is wisdom
Thought is suspect
And money is their idol
And nothing is okay
Unless it's scripted in their bible
But I know there's so much more to find
Just in looking through myself
And not at them"

Aquarius enjoys dealing with modern methods and ideas, working for the community and for mankind. On the bright side, Aquarians are friendly and humane. They like to dream and plan a happy future, learn from the past, making good friends, having fun, fighting for good causes.

"Let The Sunshine In"
Hair
(Ragni/Rado/MacDermot)

"We starve-look at one another
Short of breath
Walking proudly in our winter coats
Wearing smells from laboratories
Facing a dying nation
Of moving paper fantasies
Listening for the new told lies
With supreme visions of lonely tunes”
Hair hit theaters in 1979 by the hands of director Milos Forman. The plot changes in Michael Weller's script and the absence of several songs from the stage version deeply displeased the original writers, Gerome Ragni and James Rado, who claimed the film failed portraying the pacifist and the hippie movements. But the reviews were favorable and the film collected prizes. Let The Sunshine In closes the musical and the movie, when the hippies long for the end of the Vietnam War, turning the song into a political hymn of that era.

Aquarius doesn't like empty promises and feeling lonely. They don't like everyday life and limitations. For Aquarians, life has to be filled color and unexpected circumstances. They are progressive and very advanced in their ideas, which makes them considered, almost always, ahead of their time.

Rent launched the career of several famous actors, among them Taye Diggs, Anthony Rapp and Idina Menzel, who would play Elphaba on Wicked years later. In 2005 most of the original cast reprized their roles in the film  adaptation, which didn't do well in box office and got mostly bad and average reviews from critics. But Rent remains as one of the musicals with the largest and most loyal fanbase, spending 12 years on Broadway since 1996 and closing in 2008.

"La Vie Boheme"
Rent
(Larson)

"Bisexuals, trisexuals, homo sapiens
Carcinogens, hallucinogens, men, Pee Wee Herman
German wine, turpentine, Gertrude Stein
Antonioni, Bertolucci, Kurosawa
Carmina Burana (...)
To sodomy,
It's between God and me
To S & M
La vie Boheme"

Owners of enviable mental agility and a great sense of opportunity, they can sometimes look disloyal and opportunistic. They are patient, persevering, humanitarian, stubborn, and very independent. Always seek to act peacefully. They love making friends, and they do not tolerate any kind of segregation or prejudice.

One quality: Idealism
One flaw: Radicalism

"Hakuna Matata"
The Lion King
(John/Rice)

"Hakuna Matata!
What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata!
Ain't no passing craze
It means no worries
For the rest of your days
It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata!"

Disney transformed Shakespeare's masterpiece Hamlet with songs by Elton John and Tim Rice into an animated fable. Released in 1994, The Lion King tells the story of Simba,  who will succeed his father as King of the Lands of Pride; However, when his father dies in an accident, Simba is manipulated by his jealous uncle into thinking that he was responsible, and flees exile. An absolute hit, The Lion King was one of the most profitable films of the year, and won 2 Oscars. In 1997 it was adapted to Broadway, where it won the Tony for best musical. Hakuna Matata is the alternative life philosophy that Timon and Pumba teach Simba soon after being taken into exile.

Who has friends has everything.

Memphis is a musical by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, that opened in 2002, in California about DJ Dewey Phillips from Memphis, Tennessee, one of the first white DJs to play black music on the radio in the early 1950s. The show transfered to Broadway in 2009, and had a 3-year run. Memphis was a box-office and critics success, winning the Tony award for best musical in 2010. Steal Your Rock 'N' Roll is the song that closes the musical.

"Steal Your Rock 'N' Roll"
Memphis
(Brian/DiPietro)

"I listened to advice
From folks smarter than me
And i ignored it
I listened to hatred
From folks richer than me
And i deplored it
I listened to music
From folks darker than me
And you know i adored it"

Out with the old and in with the new.

"Our main purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can not help them, at least do not harm."

"I Am What I Am"
La Cage Aux Folles
(Herman)

"And so what
If I love each feather and each bangle
Why not
Try to see things from a different angle
Your life is a shame
Till you can shout out loud
I am what I am”

La Cage Aux Folles is a 1983 Tony award winning musical by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman based on Jean Poiret's 1973 French homonym play about a gay couple, Georges and Albin, and the misadventures that happen when Georges's son brings home his fiancé's ultra-conservative parents. The musical itself never had a film version, but the French play has two adaptations: a French one from 1978 and an American version starring Robin Williams from 1996. In I Am What I Am, Albin rejects the idea of hiding his sexuality to please others and expresses all his self pride in not conforming to social standards. The song was recorded by Gloria Gaynor and became a gay anthem.
